Kindle 8 – test – Benchmark.pl – benchmark.pl

Kindle 8 is a basic e-book reader offered by Amazon. It is clearly cheaper than the Paperwhite, Voyage and primarily Oasis. Understandably, much of them are also different. First of all, we do not find here doświetlanego screen, so you can read even late in the evening or at night without turning on additional light source. To lower the price of the device used here also display a lower resolution.

Does this mean that the latest Kindle edition 8 should not have a reason to exist? On the contrary. This is an excellent example of how we should look modern, easy to use and seamlessly operating reader, which in addition is available at a very affordable price.

Appearance and ergonomics

I had the opportunity to test a lot of readers, including the latest model of Kindle Oasis (in which I fell in love, but for me it is too expensive ), as well as probably currently the most popular reader Paperwhite 3 (my primary reader). In terms of design the new Kindle 8 ranks right between them. It looks much like Paperwhite, but in terms of lightness much closer to his Oasis.

8 Kindle in hand

8 Kindle is surprisingly light. Weighing just 161 grams, which is over 40 grams less than the Paperwhite. The difference on paper might not seem so significant, but I assure you that it is very clearly felt in the course of reading. “The eight” is much more comfortable to hold in one hand than the Paperwhite. Weighing only 130 grams Oasis can compete in this respect with the new kundalini.

The second thing is much narrower frame around the screen. At first glance, it seems by the fact that the display itself is smaller, but it is only an illusion. As with all Amazon readers, here we have a screen size of 6 inches. Smaller frames make, however, that the reader is more convenient, take up less space and easier to hold in your hand.

the housing reader is made of matte plastic. However, while the Paperwhite rear part of the casing is made of plastic with a rubberized texture, so Kindle 8 of the missing. By this reader is a little more slippery, and for that you need to get used to – I think that this is our first e-book reader, it will not be this problem.

Those seeking a large number of connectors will probably be disappointed, but in truth, no additional ports in addition to the micro USB are not needed here. This terminal will serve to charge the reader and connect it to your computer (in this way you can eg. Upload larger files, such as a book with a lot of illustrations or photos).

Display

Ok, the new Kindle is lighter and more portable than its older and more expensive brother, so why is it so much cheaper? The difference lies mainly in the display. We are here because E Ink Pearl display with a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels, which gives a ratio of ppi of 167. This is almost two times less than the Paperwhite models and Oasis.

 comparison page with text Bookerly

If you change to either of these readers , the difference will be visible to the naked eye. Fonts are less clear (this is especially evident in the case of the font Palatino, which on 8 Kindle just looks bad). Choosing popular Bookerly is much better. Unfortunately, photos do not reflect this fully.

There is also more light here. When reading during the day is not noticeable, because text is perfectly readable (no different from ordinary paper). However, if you want to read in low light (in the evening, at night, or even on the tram), it can not do without an external source of light.

Work

When it comes to working time, it does not fault anything. When fully charged, the battery energy is enough to us for a few weeks. I use it both in the course of a week’s holiday and the usual working days, when I had time to read in the tram or just before bedtime. During the two weeks testing the battery level dropped to half, so I can safely say that it is good.

The service and menu

Menu reader is identical to the more expensive models. By launching the Kindle first go through a quick tutorial, where you can get tips on how to use the reader. We will learn how to change the page, how to run menu and connect the device to the network and register your account Amazon.

Sam main screen to view recently read books and orders from Amazon. The latter can be turned off in the settings. Our books are located in the My Library. Here one important thing. We are here because two views. By selecting “All” will display all the books we have placed in the Amazon cloud, while “Downloaded” is a book downloaded to the reader or uploaded directly from your computer. Books can be displayed as a list or as thumbnails of cover art (if available).

at the top of the screen is the menu bar, where we find a shortcut to the home screen, turn on flight mode, synchronize the reader from Amazon account (useful if you read on multiple devices), and go to store.

More advanced settings are in a separate menu. We set there, among others, WiFi connection, device name, connect to Facebook and Twitter to share your favorite quotes, you can also set parental controls or restore the reader to factory settings.

Read

well, and how latest Kindle works in practice? Very good. If you want to start your adventure with e-book reader, the “Eight” is probably one of the best choices at this point. The reader works fast, I got the impression that even faster than the Paperwhite and Oasis. This is due to the fact that here we have the screen with a lower resolution, which is much less stress for the components.

Of course, during the change of sides, this difference is not so important, but it can be seen, eg. When browsing the menu . The difference is, however, visible in display quality. Unfortunately, E Ink Pearl in this respect quite significantly inferior nowszemu E Ink Carta, so the first time during the change from the Paperwhite for me was quite painful. Fonts are less clear and sharp. Fortunately, after a long time somehow forget about it and just dove in reading.

we can not however forget about the lack of additional lighting, so reading in the evening we have to support the lamp. If, however, and so lighting is not for us a key element of the reader, the Kindle meet expectations.

It is light, handy, and its price (especially by ordering directly from Amazon store) is very advantageous. 8 Kindle, it’s just a very good device. Perfect for that, to see if the e-book reader, it’s something for me. I recommend it!
