Books will survive the age of the Kindle – Spectator.co.uk (blog)

The Kindle does not seem to be doing too well. According this Waterstones, sales of the e-reader have virtually disappeared, while in America, the Nook is losing $ 70 million a year. I’m not sure Whether this is something to mourn or to celebrate; and the triumph of Bibliophilia over the new technology or the loss of an opportunity that promote reading. My old Kindle is useful on planes, but the technology is actually quite clumsy: the pages sometimes refuse to swipe and I’ve never quite got used to finding my place at ‘location 15.597′ or wherever. Anyway, I’ve always believed That books have an aesthetic quality, that they are more than the sum of Their contents. I notice more and more Bookshops are selling handsomely bound volumes of classics and the demand for signed copies seems to be insatiable. It’s really quite comforting That literature survives on its own terms in this technological age.

This is an extract from Anthony Horowitz’s Christmas Notebook.

The test readers. Kindle vs inkBook – Gazeta.pl

E-books, or electronic books, still is in Poland margin – approx. 3-4 per cent. all books sold. At the same time it’s basically the only segment of the market books, which Ron and it’s double-digit year-on-year. The biggest paradox of this situation is that the most popular digital reader of books on the Vistula is … Amazon Kindle, which until mid this year was not even officially sold in Poland. At the Amazonie these prono looking for Polish literature. At the time of writing these owls on amazon.de is located exactly one e-book in Polish language.

Reader Amazon’s (CAA principle and their family) to convince themselves first and foremost quality – reliable ACTION, niezym design, materiaami , easily’s Guide. And that using Kabelka USB or button ksigarni website can be for him will load virtually any a book purchased at another location, the device quickly zdobyo popular.

But the lack of a strong presence in Poland Amazon wants to use Poznaska company Legimi. This Spokane, which offers subscription access to a huge database of e-books – 12 thousand. position in the Polish language, including many new products publishing. In October of this year Legimi wprowadzio now offers – subscription reader for zotówk. CEO, Nikolaus Maaczyski, announces that the machine – inkBook Obsidian – will be a worthy competitor to the Kindle. This check.

What differs reader of books from the tablet

Before we get to compare the readers, a few words about what technology is used in this type sprzcie. Often also it happens that the reader is confused with the tablet, and between devices is one major difference – the screen.

The tablet displays the images in the same way as a laptop or a TV. The screen is made up of hundreds of thousands of LEDs that emit wiato towards the reader. Wild poczeniu the three primary colors – red, green and blue, any color can be obtained. One point on the screen that may adoptive any color from black (all LEDs off) after Biay (all LEDs so the pen power) Specifies as a pixel.

This method of display image allows you to show pynnych animation in color, because LEDs can be brightens and darkens faster than it is able to process the human brain. But the screen has three disadvantages. First mczy sight, especially when the World Service from (the screen) is located close to the eyes, which is the rule for reading. Secondly, the sharp light, the screen becomes less clear. Thirdly, total IgE issuing the world, consumes energy doprowadzajc to quickly run low battery.

diagram above measures E Ink Fig. Libranova

The reader is a completely different technology – e-ink. In fact, we should have in this case at all talking about the display because the screen is off. The reader can imagine pixel as a container with a transparent lid, which features positively and negatively naadowane grains. Let’s say positively naadowane seeds are black, and negatively biae. At each “Storage Case” and above it are located electrode. Depending on how you set them, or cigaj down biae particles by pushing up the black, or vice versa. What you will find out at the top, it is visible through the transparent lid, and hence – on the screen. Since the display is off, you need a Service from the external world (eg. Sun, light). Thanks to that slower mczy a vision, and the sharper wiato the better (although it was not until the end the truth about what further). There is one more thing – electricity needed is basically only when changing a displayed image. This allows the device thanks even for a month.

But this design has its drawbacks. Physical movement up and down the grains in the mountains is definitely slower than brightens or darkens diodes. There is no question of pynnych wic animation (forget about ogldaniu movies or playing in the dynamic of the game). The problem concerns the color palette. It is true that developed already colorful screens, E Ink, but it is a technology much more complicated (and more expensive), and the color palette is poor (eg. 4096 colors in the reader, compared to 16 million in the tablet.)

Appearance

Once you have issues which the reader is we have for each other, przejdmy to compare Amazon Kindle Paperwhite and inkBook Obsidian.

Both devices May the screens of identical size, but differ proportions of housing. InkBook is more “square”, the Kindle – “prostoktny”. Devices looks for solid and well made. There is no feeling that in a moment drop out which button, which unfortunately also happens in some models.

Both devices are so handy that can fit up even a small handbag and lightweight (approx. 200 grams) at it turns out very comfortable with duszym reading.

The housing inkBooka is slightly thicker. On the sides, level with the center of the screen buttons are located pozwalajce to deny the parties without taking your hands off the reader. On the one hand, it is a convenient solution, with the second event out (especially at the beginning of the use) incidental Pressing.

At the top inkBooka placed card slot for microSD memory socket microUSB (for charging and connection device to the computer) and button Powering the reader.

The casing is slimmer Kindle. There are no buttons on it for except wcznika at the bottom of the unit. Below the screen Kindle housing is wider than in inkBooku (that by this device Amazon is more “rectangularshaped”. This makes the reader can surely catch on, even Majka thick fingers. For a long reading, it is a convenient solution and Obsidian ustpuje little box here.

Display

To test uylimy Kindle Paperwhite sixth generation. Currently on the market available is slightly newer model, which differ mainly screen with higher resolution (300 ppi compared to 212 ppi). But even on the test device both text and pictures are EXPRESS. Flip pages are Pynnä, the unit responds quickly of touching a finger. In this model Paperwhite available option is the backlight of the screen. This is especially useful when reading out at night – no having to ignite lights . However, one should bear in mind that LEDs will rapidly using very battery.

inkBook Obsidian and Kindle Paperwhite Fig. Luke Józefowicz

In fact, exactly the same can be said about Obsidian. The screen also is Highly Visible (212 ppi), has a backlight and responds well to touch. In both urzdzeniach we are dealing with a 6-inch display, which cho seemingly small, very well checked up in practice. But between the screens are these small differences.

Display Obsidian is exactly the same height as the housing frame. WIC If we close our eyes and we will drive your finger across the device, do not feel the edges of the display. This is similar to WIC screen smartphone. The Kindle Paperwhite is Highly Visible fault. It is a detail, but it does that in niechccy Obisidianie is easier to flip pages.

operating system

Both devices are primarily readers of books. In this role, check out the best. Allow you to select fonts, enlarging the letters, just Increasing between lines of text (can safely use them sabszym people with sight).

But besides this, know a few tricks. On both can be viewed online (on Kindle’u still is described as an experimental feature). The devices are equipped with a module Wi-Fi. If zapacimy more, Kindle can also equip the 3G communications. The Amazon device is the built-in vocabulary (just hold your finger large unknown Owl). The problem is that there is no option tumaczenia on Polish language.

inkBook Obsidian Fig. Luke Józefowicz

InkBook is far more opportunities because It runs on Android 4.2.2. This means that it will give up on the whole mass install the application. The tested version is m. Al. email client, access to the disk in the cloud or program, serving the latest news from the world. Many of them, however, is not suitable for use due to the parameters of the device, so wic better-round application store treat “experimentally”.

inkBook Obsidian Fig. Luke Józefowicz

The open architecture gives another advantage. Amazon Kindle for today does not support the popular ePub format, which Obsidian is doing great time. It is quite important that due to the DRM security system, part of the publishers gives access to epub files only.

It should be remember one thing. Although the possibility to install the application is a great advantage, because the device can be personalized and used not only to read books, you have with this careful. It is easy to blizzard system, and then irritated that the device actually works slowly.

Price

It is difficult to give prices for the latest Amazon Kindle Paperwhite’a. Especially during witecznym it up tight ranges – up to 40 euros! Even a week ago on amazon.de, special offer BYO device can be bought for 99 euros, today is already 119-139 euros for the version without 3G. You have to wic was estimated that for the newest Kindle-pay will need between 450 and 600.

inkBook Obsidian and Kindle Paperwhite Fig. Luke Józefowicz

inkBooka reader can be bought in Legimi subscription for 1. In this zwizujemy a given distribution company for two years pacc miesicznie of 49.99. In addition to the device, the reader gets unlimited access to base total amount of e-books. The appliance can buy these for approx. 600 with in supermarkets of electronics and slightly less on the network.
