Highlighting the Kindle and the American Mind - First Things (blog)

Kindle Highlighting and the American Mind

May 24, 2013

Micah Mattix

In a short piece for The New Republic , Noreen Malone examines the most frequently highlighted phrases from books available on the Kindle for what they tell us about the contemporary mind. These include passages from books like The Hunger Games , Pride and Prejudice , The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People . What strikes her, she writes, is “how American sentiments are the”:

Even the one quotation on the letter in French, from Sherlock Holmes Translates to a very American ode to productivity. (“The man is nothing, the work is everything.”) The American spirit is not just some fabrication of Scholars or pundits, and it has not been eroded over time, at least judging by this letter. Self-reliance and the hope for a better tomorrow-and a better self-are embedded in nearly every underlined passage.

This is not what struck me. Some of the highlighted passages are very “American” in the stereotypical sense suggests Malone (dry as the one she notes above or Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers recommendation in that “three things-autonomy , complexity, and a connection between effort and reward-are, most people agree, the three qualities That work has to have if it is to be satisfying “). But most of the first fifty deal with love or fate, two of the most common subjects of all literature from Homer to the present.

On love, for example, we have passages like these:

“‘I just want to spend every possible minute of the rest of my life with you,” Peeta replies. “( Catching Fire , Suzanne Collins)

” Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true. Here is the place where I love you. “( The Hunger Games , Suzanne Collins)

” ‘Having an eye for beauty is not the same thing as a weakness, ” Peeta points out. ‘Except possibly when it comes to you.’ “( Catching Fire , Suzanne Collins)

” Our most basic emotional need is not to fall in love but to be genuinely loved by another “( The Five Love Languages ??, Gary D. Chapman)

And on the occurrence of events beyond our control and our response to them, we have passages like these:

“Because sometimes things happen to people and they’re not equipped to deal with them.” ( Catching Fire , Suzanne Collins)

“We’re fickle, stupid beings with poor memories and a great gift for self-destruction. “( Mocking Jay , Suzanne Collins)

” Whatever words they use, the real message is clear. “Look how we take your children and sacrifice them and there’s nothing you can do. If you lift a finger, we will destroy every last one of you. Just as we did in District Thirteen. ‘”( The Hunger Games , Suzanne Collins)

” Life is infinitely stranger than anything Which the mind of man could invent. “( The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes , Arthur Conan Doyle)

Granted, these are not particularly eloquent or nuanced passages (and, as a colleague of mine remarked, not every reader only highlights passages with Which they agree), but they all deal with love or fate in some way or another.

Malone does not entirely ignore these passages, but she’s at a bit of a loss as to what to make of them. Regarding the first group, That she claims she can not explain the significance of phrases like “I want to spend every possible minute of the rest of my life with you,” or at least not quickly. She finds the second group “striking” for Their “bleakness” and Suggests That they express “inherently flawed human selves,” but leaves it at that to turn the American “productivity” and “self-reliance.”

Malone’s article is a bit off-the-cuff, so I do not want to make too much of it, but it does show, I think, how narrow it can be sometimes to read literature (or responses This literature) as a reflection of social contexts alone.

I study and teach American and world literature, and the reigning approach to literary texts over the past fifty years has been to treat texts largely as expressions or Rejection of societal norms, Ideologies, or power relations. There is some merit to this approach. Literary works to reflect the values ??and beliefs of a Particular time and place. They can also challenge Those values ??and beliefs. And the cause-and-effect argumentative structure of this approach is also the One That the academy values ??at the moment, so it makes sense for professors to make these sorts of arguments about texts.

But it can also cause critics and Scholars to force textual or artistic “date” to fit a pre-determined The argument regarding to power relations That can lead to erroneous, even downright silly Conclusions. I read an article recently posited That That in a performance for television, Duke Ellington used his music and movements on camera to challenge the “decorporealization” that U.S. Steel had somehow been able to inflict on the masses.

Conservative critics can be guilty of this same sort of ideological over-simplification (using the same approach, I’m sure they’d be shocked to discover) when they argue That all “modern” literature and art is worthless because it embodies the relativism of the age.

Or, as in the case of Malone, this approach can cause a critic to miss the forest for the trees-to see expressions of “an ode to American productivity” instead of a universal and unchanging longing for companionship and meaning.

Amazon Kindle Fire extends the range of HD, but without Amazon Prime - dobreprogramy

can say that it is better late than never – Amazon finally made it possible to buy a tablet with the Kindle Fire line of the Vistula River. Poland is on the list of 170 countries in which the tablet can be ordered now from the line in the pre. When ordering, it states that shipments will begin on June 13.

Kindle Fire tablet is a series that caused a huge stir in the market. At the end of 2011 saw the first of them – 7-inch – at $ 199, a year later the price was reduced to $ 159, while the 199 can buy a refreshed version of HD. Compact size, good price and access to a huge collection of multimedia in the Amazon Prime (subscription allows, inter alia, to watch movies, series and “lend” ebooks) earned him a lot of success overseas. The tablets can reach us unfortunately without Contract Prime, you get access only to the Amazon Android Appstore, and of course to the store.

prices are in U.S. dollars. The model 7-inch Kindle Fire HD 16 GB (1280 × 800, dual antenna WiFi, 2 cores, 1.2 GHz, webcam for video chatting) will have to pay the equivalent of $ 289 (214 net per tablet), and for version 8.9 -Inch 16 GB (1920 × 1200, allegedly SoC efficient than Tegra 3) $ 375 (284 net per tablet itself). 'Kindle Worlds' Lets Authors Publish Fan Fiction - At Dubious Cost - Wired

Those of you furiously polishing your meticulously researched and beautifully written Gossip Girl fanfic novel, rejoice – Amazon has created a platform whereby you can not only publish it, but possibly make money from it. Whether you’ll want to use platforms That remains to be seen.

Yesterday, the House That Built Bezos Announced the launch of the Kindle Worlds, a digital publishing platform where writers can publish fan fiction under official licenses. Right now, Amazon’s deal is limited to Gossip Girl , Pretty Little Liars , and The Vampire Diaries – all from Warner Bros. Pictures. ‘Alloy Entertainment – but it promises more to come.

On the surface, it seems like a sweet deal. After years of conflict over the copyright issues and ethical conundrums of non-licensed works, fan writers finally have an official OK to not only write, but possibly profit from Their work.

Which means, of course, that there must be a catch – or catches, as it turns out. Author John Scalzi was quick to voice Concerns about the publishing agreement and the program’s potential impact on professional writers working in the media tie-in market. Wired spoke with attorney Jeff Trexler, who Expressed Concerns similar, pointing to a clause in Amazon’s contact That grants Amazon and the licensor rights to the text of the stories and any original elements they might contain.

“In short, if your fan fiction includes new elements That catch on with the general public, it’s Likely That’ll not be able to profit from them outside of the stories That you write,” he said. “For example, Time Warner could launch a movie series based on a character you created and not owe you a dime. While the terms Daytime you retain the copyright, you also give Amazon an exclusive license to your original work and Amazon in turn licenses your work to Time Warner in a license That Provides nothing for you. “

Furthermore, says Trexler, if you DECIDED to keep using That character outside of the Kindle Worlds, you’d be Violating the terms of your contract.

But what do the fans have to say? Betsy Rosenblatt is a professor at Whittier Law School, and chair of the legal committee of the Organization for Transformative Works, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing access to and preserving fan works and culture. She said the Organization is pleased to see Amazon taking an interest in fan works, but, like Trexler and Scalzi, she has reservations about the rights writers would be signing away, and about the restrictions on content: Amazon’s list of content guidelines nix pornography and crossovers, as well as some more nebulous and Subjective qualities like “offensive content” and “poor customer experience.”

Rosenblatt, Those restrictions underline The Importance of unrestricted fan platforms, like OTW’s Archive of Our Own, which “allow fans to express the full range of Their creativity and appreciate the creativity of other fans through fair use.”

Indeed, given the limited licenses, draconian content guidelines, and dubious contracts, it’s hard to imagine fans abandoning open platforms for a far-from-guaranteed paycheck. While the Kindle Worlds is sure to attract a fair number of fan writers are excited at the prospect of working under official license and maybe even making a buck or two off their stories, for many, the most appealing route to publication will remain ‘the one taken by Fifty Shades of Grey author EL James: just file off the serial numbers.

Two Takes Its Amazon Kindle Fire HD Models Global, Now In 170 Countries - TechCrunch

No, we still do not have any word from Amazon on where it stands with a smartphone, but it’s definitely making its mobile ambitions clear anyway. Today, the e-commerce giant took two more steps in its strategy to scale up its Kindle Fire tablet business. It Announced That it will now sell the two higher-end versions of the device, the Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HD 8.9 “, in 170 countries. And it also said its Amazon Appstore That will now be available in 200 countries.

Pre-orders in 170 countries begins today with the first models shipping out June 13, priced at the local equivalents of $ 284 for the 8.9 “model and $ 214 for the 7″ model.

Up to now, the Android-based Appstore, Which works both on Amazon’s Fire tablet range but also other Android devices, has only been live in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, China and Japan, with Brazil next in line. It makes sense That Amazon will have opened it up at the same time as it’s ramping up its Fire tablet distribution.

“We are thrilled to be expanding the reach of our global app distribution to nearly 200 countries,” said Mike George, VP of Apps and Games at Amazon, in a statement. “By further expanding the distribution of apps to millions of customers around the world, we are continuing to make it easy for customers to enjoy Their apps on Amazon’s Kindle Fire and any Android device.”

Amazon will be kicking off with a couple of free games – a tradition of Amazon’s when it opens up a new store front to focus on some bestsellers. In this case, it will be “Fruit Ninja” and “Cut the Rope: Experiments,” which will be free respectively on May 23 and May 24

On a more long-tail note, it’s important for Amazon to make its Appstore globally as available as possible as a way of enticing more developers to the platform. In addition to giving them the promise of wide audiences, Amazon has also turned on features like in-app payments, subscriptions and even its own virtual currency, Amazon Coins, to give developers more flexibility in how they make money on its plaform (and, taking a page from Apple’s book, tie them and users further into the Amazon ecosystem in the process). It also comes on the heels of the company previewing the global Appstore availability in April, when it Began to invite developers to start Submitting Their apps.

The company, as usual with Amazon, has Remained tight-lipped on how many tablets it has sold since launching the Kindle Fire range in 2011. Today, however, Dave Limp, VP, Amazon Kindle, Noted That The Kindle Fire HD (the 7 “model) has been the company’s” # 1 best-selling item in the world “since being launched.

Although the HD is available with an optional component of LTE in the U.S. it looks like this rollout is WiFi-only: to improve range and service, it comes with dual-band Wi-Fi capability for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network network services. As with other Kindle Fire products, the two models going on sale today will work with Amazon’s existing and wide range of content, Including apps, films, TV, games and 300 + books “exclusive to the Kindle Store.”

The move comes two months after Amazon dropped the price on the bigger two tablets, with an 8.9 “screen, then $ 269 At that time, it started selling it in Europe and Japan.

To date, Amazon has been selling the two HD tablets in the U.S., UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Japan. For a company like Amazon, Which operates on a basis of competition-beating prices and low margins, it’s important for it to add as much scale as it can to its operation, so expanding Fire HD sales globally is an essential part of That strategy.

Amazon.com, Inc.. (AMZN), is a leading global Internet company and one of the most trafficked Internet retail destinations worldwide. Amazon is one of the first companies to sell products deep into the long tail by housing them in numerous warehouses and distributing products from many partner companies. Amazon directly sells or acts as a platform for the sale of a broad range of products. These include books, music, videos, consumer electronics, clothing and household products. Amazon unveils Kindle Worlds publishing platform to help aspiring fan fiction ... - The Next Web

Amazon Announced a new publishing platform today called Kindle Worlds, Which will give both established and aspiring authors fan fiction writers the chance to earn royalties based on Their work.

Fan fiction is a rather murky topic, given That it often Combines beloved characters and franchises in rather unusual scenarios. Regardless, the medium has proven to be incredibly popular on the Internet and it’s clear That Amazon sees an opportunity to earn some additional profits.

The company has secured licenses from Warner Bros. Pictures. Television Group’s Alloy Entertainment division for Gossip Girl, by Cecily von Ziegesar, Pretty Little Liars, by Sara Shepard, and Vampire Diaries, by LJ Smith. All three are also incredibly successful TV shows in Their Own right, Which Should add to the interest both from fans and aspiring writers.

Amazon says it plans to announce more licenses “soon”.

The new Kindle

Worlds platform will enable any author to publish stories based on these characters and then make them available for purchase through the Kindle Store. Amazon will then pay royalties both to the author of the fan fiction and the original rights holder. The standard author’s royalty rate – for fiction That is at least 10,000 words in length – will be just over a third (35 percent) of net revenue.

“As with all titles from Amazon Publishing, Kindle Worlds will base net revenue off of sales price-rather than the lower, the industry standard of wholesale price-and royalties will be paid monthly,” the company said today in a statement.

coincide with the announcement, Amazon is also launching a pilot program to give additional exposure to short stories of between 5,000 and 10,000 words. For these works, Amazon promises to pay the royalties for the rights holder and authors and digital royalty of 20 percent.

Worlds

The Kindle store will launch in June with over 50 commissioned works from established authors dry as Barbara Freethy, John Everson and Colleen Thompson. The self-service platforms submission, Which will allow fan fiction writers to file completed work, will also open Simultaneously.

Amazon Thinks You Should Cash In On That Fan Fiction, Meet "Kindle Worlds" - Geekosystem

writing

Fan fiction is something that I never understood. Why put all the effort into writing something That you can never have published because you do not own the rights? That’s not a problem anymore. Amazon Kindle Just Announced Worlds – a publishing platform That lets anyone publish content set in licensed worlds . I’m going to write so much Pretty Little Liars fan fiction.

There is no shortage of fan fiction on the Internet, but until now there’s been no way to monetize it because of copyright and intellectual property laws. Kindle Worlds is genius because it lets fans play In Their favorite fictional universe and actually get rewarded for Their efforts, but it also pays the people who created That universe in the first place.

Standard

Kindle royalty rates will be applied to Worlds. Works over 10,000 words long will receive 35% of the profits with the rest being split between Amazon and the original rights holders. Shorter works between 5,000 and 10,000 works will receive 20% under a new pilot program That Amazon is launching with Worlds.

Right now it’s unclear just how many and Which properties Amazon is going to have locked up, but at the moment they’ve Mentioned Gossip Girl , Vampire Diaries , and Pretty Little Liars . They’ll be announcing more properties soon, and I really hope they get the rights to The A-Team .

Not that I’m

Particularly excited by any of the three properties Announced, but I imagine there are plenty people drooling over the idea of ??cashing in on Their Vampire Diaries fan fiction. Amazon does not have standards though, and there are guidelines for what will and will not fly in the Kindle Worlds. The most notable being that you can not publish your weird slash fiction, or other offensive content.

Other guidelines are

That the work can not popup a “poor customer experience.” That Defines Amazon as meaning, “We do not accept books That popup a poor customer experience. Examples include poorly formatted books and books with misleading titles, cover art, or product descriptions. We reserve the right to DETERMINE Whether Provides content and poor customer experience. “

I took it to mean Amazon does not want to publish your terrible fan faction.

Writers also can not use other copyrighted material in the work, make excessive references to specific brands, or write crossover stories. They’re not specific about Whether or not that includes a crossover between properties like they’re licensing a Pretty Little Gossip Vampire story, but since That would probably make dividing profits more confusing – and be terrible – it’s a safe bet it’s not allowed.

Announced Since all three properties come from Alloy Entertainment’ll probably see a few more titles from the company when Amazon announces more licensed properties. Besides the three Mentioned, they also publish Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants , The Clique , The Lying Game , Private , and more titles I’m unfamiliar with because I’m a 30-year-old man.

Seriously though, Amazon. Please lock up the rights to The A-Team . I have a great Mr. T origin story ready to go.

Amazon_Coins-580-75 Early last week Amazon Announced That it was Introducing a new virtual currency service in the form of Amazon Coins. These coins can be used as currency for Amazon Kindle and Amazon App Store purchases.

The virtual currency that’s currently only available in the U.S. converts directly with pennies meaning 100 Amazon Coins equals to $ 1 and has been Introduced as another easy way for customers to purchase things from the online stores. To celebrate the launch of Amazon has given every Kindle Fire owner in the U.S. 500 coins to use On Their next Kindle purchase.

“Today we are giving Kindle Fire owners $ 5 worth of Coins to spend on new apps and games, or to purchase in-app items, dry as recipes in iCookbook, song collections in SongPop or mighty falcon bundles in Angry Birds Star Wars. And with discounts of up to 10% when you buy Coins, this is a great way for customers to save money when they buy apps, games and in-app items, “said Mike George, Vice President of Apps and Games at Amazon. “We will continue to add more ways to earn and spend Coins on a wider range of content and activities-today is Day One for Coins.”

Amazon Coins can be purchased on Amazon.com with a 10% discount given to bulk purchases and the Amazon Coins do not have an expiration so they’ll Remain on your account until they’re spent.

There’s good news for developers too who have been promised the same 70% of the revenue from Their apps or Games That are purchased with Amazon Coins.

That I personally think this is a brilliant idea and Hope that it’s Introduced everywhere. It’ll be perfect for customers who often let Their children use their Kindles and Will Prevent accidental in-app-purchases especially if you can limit your account to only use Amazon Coins for App Store purchases.

Leaked Memo Shows Barnes & Noble Bringing Web Browser And Email To ... - TechCrunch

 OOVrvaJ

An upcoming update will bring a web browser, email and update the app store is Barnes & Noble’s super-affordable Simple Touch Nook line of e-readers, Which will begin rolling out June 1 According to a source close to the matter who wishes to remain anonymous. The 1.5.0 update was created in response to the critical and positive customer response to the recent Nook Tablet update Google Play That brought to B & N’s Android-powered devices.

The Simple Touch and Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight will be receiving the over-the-air update starting next month, marking the first time That Nook’s entry-level readers get official access to web browsing capabilities. Amazon’s competing Kindle devices have shipped with an “experimental” web browser since the Kindle 2, but have not offered an email client on anything except for the Kindle Fire tablets.

Making

Nook hardware a little more flexible for users is a good way for Barnes & Noble to help counter flagging sales of dedicated hardware Nook, Which were shown to be weak in recent quarterly results. Nook weakness probably ended up prompting the bookseller to offer promotional giveaways with on-hand inventory.

When B & N Announced That Google Play would be coming to the Nook tablets, and praised the decision as a key step in helping the company position them as an affordable, fully featured Android tablets, as opposed to just glorified e-readers that could accommodate for a bit more than most. The Nook Simple Touch is still pretty focused on e-books, but as an e-mail and basic triage device browser, especially for text heavy content, it probably Becomes a lot more attractive to an audience wants That mostly books but would like a little more general -the use of value as well. Especially for older buyers, I imagine a simplified device with a cheap price tag has the potential to carry appeal over a much more expensive full-fledged tablet.

Will

a browser and email client be enough to right the ship Nook? Probably not on Their Own, but B & N is at least expending effort in the right direction to combat flagging consumer interest in dedicated e-reader devices.

The Amazon Kindle Keyboard Getting Harder to Find - Good E-Reader (blog)

benskindle

The Amazon Kindle Keyboard has received a number of new firmware updates over the course of the last two years, most Notably parental controls. The e-reader is getting fairly long in the tooth, when Compared to the Kindle Touch and Kindle Paperwhite. With a product refresh coming at the end of the summer, this device is getting harder to find. Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and many other retailers are now showing this reader as sold out.

The Kindle Keyboard

was a fairly popular model when it came out in 2011, when it was known as the Kindle Graphite. At the time, competition in the e-reader space was fairly poor and customers loved the ability to type notes on the physical keyboard. These days, people want touchscreens or virtual screens. The Kindle 4, Paperwhite, and Kindle Touch are the three devices Amazon is marketing, and it really looks like the Keyboard model is officially discontinued.
