If you’ve been dying to read some NYT Best Sellers (or, like me, just got a Kindle for Christmas and want to stockpile books on the cheap), Amazon is having another huge Kindle sale, in case you missed yesterday’s while opening gifts. Hornbeam Dark Matter, Why Not Me? and more titles you’ve wanted to read but didn’t want to buy at full price for under $ 5.

APC BR1300G, $ 100 | APC BE550G, $ 47 | APC 8-Outlet Surge Protector, $ 13

If you use a desktop computer, these will of course keep your machine running without any interruption in the event of a power outage, which means you won’t lose any unsaved work. But even if you only use laptops and mobile devices at home, they could still run lamps, your router and modem, or even a TV until the power comes back it.

The $ 100 gives you BR1300G 1,300 volt-amps and 780 watts, while the $ 47 APC BE550G is better suited for networking gear like your router and modem. Just note that like all Gold Box deals, these prices are only available today, or until sold out.

GoPets Premium Cat Scratcher with Catnip, $ 17

If you forgot to get your cat a holiday gift (how embarrassing!), it might forgive you if you get her this infinity lounger scratching post, complete with a bonus bag of catnip.

Editor’s note: She won’t forgive you.

PDP Energizer 2X Charging Station $ 15

Did you unwrap a new PS4 yesterday? Keep your serves off controllers with this dual charging dock for just $ 15.

12 Deals of Christmas: Kindle Paperwhite is only £89.99 in Boxing Day sales – TechRadar

The Amazon Boxing Day sales went live today, and we were delighted to see the Kindle Paperwhite take another spin in the discount dance. Usually £109.99, this boxing day deal sees it discounted down to just £89.99.

With the basic entry level Kindle most expensive at £56.99, the far superior Kindle Paperwhite is just £33 more. This is excellent value considering you get almost double the PPI resolution, making for much clearer text on the screen.

Better yet, this is the cheapest of the Kindle range with a built-in light. The light shines onto the screen from the edge, rather than through it into your face, so it’s much easier on the eye than reading a tablet at night.

Incitement for your reading habits

This excellent Kindle deal is available for both the black and white models of the Paperwhite.

While scouring the net to make sure this is the best offer around, we found some handy alternatives from those price matchers over at John Lewis and Tesco, but only in black.

John Lewis is only 4p cheaper, but you get a tempting two year warranty. Tesco has tried to outdo both by selling the Paperwhite for £89. Act fast as we imagine once Amazon puts the price back up, the others will promptly follow suit. Take your pic below.

Special Offers mean for Amazon Kindles?

If you’ve clicked through and are wondering what the ‘with or without Special Offers’ means on Amazon’s listing, they’re a part of, essentially, a screensaver-based ads, that you can pay £10 extra to remove. They disappear instantly though, with no need to wait for them to time-out (unlike those annoying ads on mobile games).

For a more complete description, and to see why we don’t think they’re worth paying extra to remove, have a look at the Best Kindle deals page, where we go into more detail.

“Kindle a little bit of light.” First night of Hanukkah celebrated with menorah lighting – MLive.com

KALAMAZOO, MI — Among the holiday decorations of snowflakes, reindeer and trees with lights in popular Bronson Park stands a menorah. Today, dozens of people gathered around this menorah to celebrate the first evening of Hanukkah.

Rabbi Mordechai Haller of Chabad House of Kalamazoo and Western Michigan spoke about the miracles of Chanukah, when the Jewish people won a battle against the Greeks, and soon after, were able to keep a menorah lit for eight full days with only one flask of oil.

Haller and Jacob Weimtraub, president of the Jewish federation of Kalamazoo and Southwest Michigan, the Lithuanian menorah, as Haller led those in attendance in songs and blessings.

Before people parted ways, Haller reminded the crowd about the importance of light in Hanukkah.

“How do we fight [darkness]? Not with sticks and stones, but the way we fight the darkness is by inciting a little bit of light. To lighting a little candle to bring a bit of positivity — a smile, a bit of Torah, and true value — bring that and create a little bit of light.”

The last night of Hanukkah is Sunday, Feb. 1, 2017.

Kindle books in Indian languages could be a game changer – Livemint

Amazon India has announced that Kindle will launch digital books in five Indian languages—Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, Gujarati and Malayalam. The titles include the Ishq Mein Hona Kegeyli to Ravish Kumar (Hindi), Rajaraja Chozhan for the Sa. On. Kannan (Tamil), Mrutyunjay by Shivaji Sawant (Marathi), Ek Bija Ne Gamta Rahiye to Kaajal Oza Vaidya (Gujarati), Aarachar by K. R. Meera (Malayalam) and Mayapuri to Shivani (Hindi). Kindle devices seventh generation and above will support Indian scripts, enabling readers to access such books.

This is a move that could be a game changer in India. Amazon India has moved methodically inserts itself in Indian publishing. First, it launched the Kindle with free lifetime digital access provided by BSNL, but only for English e-books. In November, the acquisition of local publishing companies Westland is known for its commercial fiction best-sellers and translation programme was completed at reportedly $ 6.5 million (around Rs44 crore), a small portion of the $ 5 billion allocated by Jeff Bezos as investment in India. In fact, Seattle-based Amazon Publishing’s translation imprint, AmazonCrossing, has surpassed all other publishers in the amount of world literature it makes available in the US. This was first highlighted in February 2015 by Chad Post, publisher of Open Letter Books, on his influential website, Three Percent. In October 2015 AmazonCrossing announced it had a $ 10 million budget to invest in translations around the world. It is probably no coincid ence that Amazon India vice – president and country manager Amit Agarwal has been inducted into the Bezos core team, which is responsible for its global strategy.

In an email, Post responded to the news, saying: "This seems like a great thing for Indian readers and anyone interested in Indian literature. Amazon’s stated goal is to make as many books available in as many formats to as many people as possible, and this program is a strong move in that direction. Increasing digital access to these books will be huge—it greatly expands the potential audience, and could help expand into AmazonCrossing publishing Indian writers in translation. AmazonCrossing published 60 works translated into English in 2016, which is far more than any other publisher. The majority of these titles are translated from German, French and Spanish, but AmazonCrossing has expanded into doing works from Serbia, Turkish, Chinese and Indonesian, so it makes sense that they would be interested in finding books from these five Indian languages."

In India, this announcement could not have come at a more opportune moment. With demonetization, Indians who prefer dealing in cash are perforce moving to digital payments. Also, by July 2017, it will be mandatory for all handsets manufactured, stored, sold and distributed in India by to support the inputting of text in English, Hindi and at least one more official Indian language, and support reading of text in all these languages, thus making it feasible to read books other than English on the Kindle app too.

Kannan Sundaram, publisher, Kalachuvadu, welcomed the decision: "We hope it will increase our revenue from e-books which is pretty low now. Tamilians are spread all over the world. It is near impossible to reach the hard copies to them. So this will boost the chances for them to read Tamil books of their choice." Best-selling author Ashwin Sangha called it an "outstanding initiative by Amazon India. It’s about time that people’s writing moved out from the confines of a paperback. It will also enable out-of-print books to be made available now." Another best-selling author, Amish Tripathi, said this will address the inadequate distribution and marketing of Indian language books, for the much larger market is the one in Indian languages. "I am personally committed to this and am very happy that of the 3.5 million copies that have been sold of my books, a good 500,000 of them are in Indian languages." Others remarked upon the best global practices it would bri ng to local publishing.

Well-known lexicographer Hindi Arvind Kumar says it will influence reading patterns by encouraging cross-pollination of literature across cultures by opening new avenues for translation of two-way Hindi to English and other Indian languages which are being introduced on the Kindle, and from many non-English languages like French and German or, say, Latin American into Hindi". Mini Krishnan, OUP, also endorsed it, saying the readership in Indian languages is healthy, so "a highly portable personal library will surely do well".

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (2015) review: Simply the best – Pocket-lint – Pocket-lint.com

the third-generation Kindle Paperwhite was released in June 2015 so while it’s not the newest or most advanced Kindle around, that’s not to say it isn’t the best.

Succeeded by the significantly more expensive and square Kindle Oasis, the latest Paperwhite also competes with the lighter and more feature-rich Kindle Voyage, but still warrants its place in the eBook market.

Here is why Amazon’s 2015 model of the Kindle Paperwhite is our choice of Kindle, even moving into 2017, despite the pricier alternatives out there.

  • 169 x 117 x 9.1 mm
  • 205g (Wi-Fi) / 217g (3G)

The Kindle Paperwhite’s design hasn’t changed a great deal over the years. In fact, the 2015 model looks pretty much identical to the 2013 model and therefore the 2012 model, aside from a couple of subtle cosmetic changes to the Amazon and Kindle logos.

The Paperwhite is built around a plastic body, but it doesn’t feel cheap. It’s a solid device with a tactile back casing that it is not only a lovely to hold, but greasy fingerprints aren t an issue. It is a little loving from loving of foundation and suncream, but it’s nothing a quick wipe doesn’t sort.

Pocket-lint

The contour of the attachment parts around the Micro-USB and power button also makes way over2013 model, as the wide bezels on the front of the device. A large bezel on most devices is normally something that would result in criticism, but with an eBook reader it’s a welcomed feature, offering something for your thumb to grip when holding it.

Whether wifi only or 3G and Wi-Fi model, both the third-generation Kindle Paperwhite options feel no heavier than a smartphone in the hand, despite their larger size. No model s 205g/217g weight could be considered heavy, even if the Kindle Voyage is a little lighter.

  • 6-inch E Ink display
  • 16-level greyscale
  • 1440 x 1080 resolution
  • Front light, touchscreen

The Kindle Paperwhite’s design might not have changed much, but its display has. The third-generation model finally sees an increase in resolution with a 6-inch E Ink display bearing 300индекс producer price density, compared to 212ppi found on both the 2013 and 2012 models. Words are crisp and sharp while the touchscreen is very responsive.

The 2015 Paperwhite sticks with the Carta E Ink display found on the 2013 model for a high-contrast black &white results, but it adds a new font called Bookerly, which is designed for reading on digital screens, as well as a new typesetting engine. These additions, along with the higher resolution all contribute to replicating a reading equivalent that’s as enjoyable as on paper.

Pocket-lint

An illuminated display has always been one of the Paperwhite’s outstanding features, allowing users to read in both light and dark conditions without the need for an external light. It isn’t the most advanced technology available – with Amazon itself trumping it with the Kindle Voyage and its adaptive front light – but the Paperwhite”s screen is more than adequate.

  • 4GB storage (thousands of books)
  • the Kindle Store has over 4m books
  • Kindle app for phone also available
  • Ad removal is £10 per device

As has always been the way with the Kindle, there are plenty of clever features beyond just reading. Some are great, others you may never use, but the beauty of them is that they can be ignored if you’re not interested, allowing you to flick through an eBook as you would if you had a paperback.

For those who would like to take advantage of having a digital device over a paperback, one of our favourites is X-Ray. Controller with a tap at the top of the screen, this feature presents information on characters, clips the visible, common terms and themes.

Pocket-lint

Kindle Page Flip is also great, again controller with a tap at the top of the screen, followed by selecting It. This feature enables you to quickly skip to another chapter or part of the book from a pop-up window.

A tap at the top will also display how much more of the chapter you have left to read in minutes at the bottom, as well as offer access to Settings for turning the screen brightness down and the Kindle Store at the top.

The Kindle’s best attribute isn’t any of the above features though: it is how easy Amazon makes it to buy and download content. The Kindle Store has over four million books, newspapers and magazines to choose from, along with over one million Kindle-exclusive titles, all of which are delivered directly to your Kindle device as soon as you press “buy”.

in the section accessing certain settings and working out which books you have or haven’t read in your library could be made simpler though.

Pocket-lint

The Amazon Kindle app, available on most platforms, also means you can pick up where you left off on your smartphone or tablet if you forget your Kindle one morning. It’s like a multi-device bookmark.

One point worth noting is about the “special offers”: these are ads that Amazon serves, which can be removed for the sum of £10. We don’t find them overly disruptive, but if you do it’s not a huge fee. Amazon Prime subscription members can also purchase the Kindle for £5 less than list price, but the ads still rule applies for these members.

  • ‘Six week’ battery life (21-hours approx)
  • Four hour recharge cycle

There are two models of the third-generation Paperwhite as we mentioned previously. The Wi-Fi model requires a network connection to download content, while the wifi and 3G model will allow you to download new content on the go.

Given the £60 price jump between the two most people will probably be more than satisfied with the Wi-Fi only model, especially given it is possible to connect to your smartphone’s hotspot if you are really desperate for that next book.

Pocket-lint

Amazon claims the Paperwhite’s battery will last six weeks on a single charge, based on reading for 30-minutes per day, all connections turned off and display illumination set to half. That’s a whopping 21-hours.

The E Ink display itself consumes very little power, with power only really needed for page refreshes. Keeping your Paperwhite connected and turning up the display illumination will naturally that decrease battery life. Even so, we’ve found our 3G review model to last for a couple of weeks at a time, rather than mere days.

Verdict

The third-generation Kindle Paperwhite does exactly what we wanted: it increased the resolution of its display for a sensory reading experience.

Add illumination great screen and fast touch response Kindle and this – despite not being the most advanced of Amazon’s offerings – adds up to the perfect balance between a fantastic reading experience and a great price.

it’s simply the best, whether you’re considering upgrading from a 2012/13 model or simply looking to (affordably) dive into eBooks for the first time.
