Up close: Kindle Fire vs. HDX 8.9. Air & iPad Retina iPad mini - Gizmag

When we reviewed the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 “, we said That it blended the best of large and small tablets better than any other slate out there. So why not see how it sizes up next to the most popular large and small tablets around? Read on, as Gizmag goes hands-on to compare the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 “is Apple’s iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina Display.

Before the jump in, know that this comparison is more about how the Fire HDX 8.9 sizes up next to Apple’s two iPads. If you’re only looking for help Deciding between the iPad Air and iPad Mini, then we’ve got you covered there too with our hands-on comparison between Those two.

Hardware

Both iPads are very comfortable to hold

So on one hand we have two iconic Apple’s iPads. The 9.7-in iPad has the same air of screen size as every full-sized iPad since the original. And the 7.9-in Retina iPad mini takes the popular design of the original iPad mini and adds a high-resolution display (along with a little extra weight and thickness).

On the other hand there’s Amazon’s Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 “. As its name suggests, it rocks an 8.9-in screen, Which hits a pretty nice balance in between the full-sized and mini iPads. 8.9 The HDX gives you 79 percent as much screen real estate as the iPad Air, and 19 percent more than the iPad mini.

The Fire HDX 8.9 is quite the lightweight itself, as the least dense of these three tablet ...

I think that 8.9-in screen size hits a really great sweet spot. If you’ve used the iPad Air and the iPad Mini and wished you could find something in between, this might be the tablet for you. Modern-day Goldilocks rejoice: the Fire 8.9 could be your “just right” between the “too big” and “too small” iPad extremes.

In terms of display quality , they all have sharp, high-resolution screens. But the Fire HDX 8.9 is the Sharpest, with one of the best mobile displays I’ve ever seen. We’re looking at the HDX’s 339 pixels per inch vs. 264 PPI for the iPad Air and 326 PPI for the iPad mini. I think the Fire also has the best color accuracy, with the iPad Air not far behind. Of the three, the Retina iPad mini has the narrowest range of colors, it’s as if it’s a painting from a palette smaller than the other two are.

 It's plastic vs. aluminum

As far as build and construction go, the iPads have the higher-end aesthetic. They’re both made of anodized aluminum, Which should be familiar to anyone who’s handled any recent Apple products. The Fire is made of a matte plastic. It does not feel cheap or flimsy, but, well, it is still plastic.

All three feel quite comfortable in hand. The iPad Air and Kindle Fire are both so light they feel almost like toys – and yes, we mean That in a good way. The Retina iPad is the Lightest of the three, but it’s also the densest. The Fire 8.9 is the least dense of the three. So when you look at each tablet’s weight is its relative size, the Fire HDX 8.9 might actually feel The Lightest in hand.

The iPads are each 7.5 mm thick, while the Fire HDX 8.9 is 7.8 mm thick

Battery life is not remotely a concern with any of these tablets. In fact, of the big-name, high-end tablets you can buy today, I’d say these three are the cream of the crop. In our standard test (where we stream video over Wi-Fi with brightness at 75 percent) of the iPad Air lasted eight hours and 40 minutes, the iPad mini lasted 10 hours and 50 minutes, and the HDX 8.9 lasted almost exactly 10 hours. With typical – or even fairly heavy – use, none of these tablets should give you any problem at all lasting a full day.

Performance also is not an issue on any of these devices. With the older Kindle Fire models, the UI always felt a little laggy to me. But the HDX 8.9 runs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon terrific 800 processor, making it one of the fastest ARM-based tablets around. Ditto for the two iPads, Which have Apple’s 64-bit A7 silicon packed inside. There is not much more to say about the performance, other than all three of these tablets are extremely zippy, fluid, and capable of playing the latest mobile games without hiccups.

Software

The Fire is nearly as long as the iPad Air, though it's screen is 21 percent smaller

Software might be the most important area to look at before making this decision. In terms of app selection, the iPads have a huge advantage. The iOS App Store’s tablet app selection is still unparalleled, while the Amazon Appstore’s selection is not even on par with Google Play’s. So if maximum app selection is your highest priority, then you’ll definitely want to look at one of the iPads.

but that is not to say Amazon’s Fire OS can not easily serve as your tablet platforms of choice. Most of the core apps are available for download. Standards like Facebook, Netflix, Twitter, Candy Crush , Angry Birds , and so on, are all there in full force. You have a solid web browser, email app and content stores built-in. It’s missing a few key apps like Dropbox and all of Google’s services, but if you can live without Those (or Sideload them) Amazon’s skinned version of Android might be all you need.

The Kindle Fire’s OS also has a few nice perks built-in. Of course you get excellent versions of all of Amazon’s shops and services, with permanent shortcuts living right at the top of your home screen. Amazon’s video-watching experience is Particularly good on the Fire HDX. If you have a PS3 or a Miracast-enabled TV or HDMI accessory, you can sling your content to your TV from the Fire. It also has Amazon’s X-Ray feature built-in, Which gives you an instant IMDB info for the actors on the screen at any given moment. The Fire HDX coupled with a compatible TV makes for a terrific second-screen experience, at least on par with an iPad paired with an Apple TV set-top-box.

The Kindle Fire's Mayday Button Connects you with an Amazon support rep who can help answe ...

The most unique part of the Kindle Fire’s software, though, is its Mayday Button. It’s on-device customer service: tap a button and an Amazon support rep jumps onto your screen, ready to answer your questions. It looks like a video chat, as you can see the technician, but he or she can only hear you. The specialist can also draw on your screen and even control your device if you grant permission. It takes an already easy-to-grasp OS and makes it practically foolproof.

‘re probably already at least somewhat familiar with the iPads’ iOS software. In addition it its bigger and better app selection, it also gives you services like Apple’s iCloud, iWork, iTunes, Siri and iMessage. And even though there’s no love lost between Apple and Google, the iPad also has official apps for Google services All Those That are nowhere to be found on the Fire.

The iPad's loaded the App Store is its biggest advantage over the more sparsely populated Amaz ...

One head-scratching annoyance with the iPads’ iOS 7 is a significant browser crashing bug. I’ve regularly used the two new iPads running iOS 7 during the last few months, and I consistently experience multiple browser crashes each day. It’s apparently a glitch with the Webkit engine powering Safari, as the bug happens in third-party browsers (which all use Webkit) too. There are multiple Apple support pages with hundreds of complaints from customers with the same issue. Yet more than four months into iOS 7′s lifespan, the company still has not fixed it. Apple’s products usually “just work,” but this is one obvious exception.

The decision

Too big, too small ... and just right?

So Which tablet should you buy? Does the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 “warrant consideration next to Apple’s market-leading iPads? As always, that’s going to depend on what you’re looking for. On a hardware level, the answer is absolutely . On and software level, you need to start by asking yourself what you want a tablet for. If it’s all about the basics – consuming media – then the Fire could very well be worth a close look. If you’re more discerning about a large app selection of the highest quality, then you’re probably better off sticking with an iPad.

Then there’s the matter of value. In typical Amazon fashion, the Fire HDX 8.9 is the cheapest of the three. It starts at U.S. $ 380 for the 16 GB Wi-Fi only model (though you’ll need to fork over another $ 15 to get rid of the lock screen ads). The iPad Mini with Retina Display starts at $ 400 with the same 16 GB Wi-Fi configuration, and the equivalent iPad Air rings up for $ 500

The iPads look and feel a bit higher-end, With Their tight aluminum construction

I personally have been very happy using the Fire HDX 8.9 for the last week or so. Its screen size is just about perfect for me, and despite being Invested in Google’s ecosystem, I have not had too much trouble living with a Google-free mobile platforms. The Fire’s combination of hardware, pricing, and Amazon services is that good.

with that said, I’ve already spent a couple months enjoying these two iPads. They’re big steps forward from Their Predecessors, and if you’re already swimming in the deep end of Apple’s ecosystem, there are not going to be any surprises. Just watch out for that browser crashing: if you spend as much time on the web as I do, it might end up being a deal-breaker.

If you’re still torn, you can hit up our individual reviews of the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 “iPad Air, and Retina iPad Mini.

Test five e-book readers - Computer World (press release)

electronic book readers with screen type E-Ink have gained a lot of popularity. Coming by bus, you will find that at least a few people kinda makes your time reading. Interestingly, fewer and fewer people use traditional paper editions. A new trend is e-book readers with backlit E-Ink screens that allow comfortable reading even after dark. We tested five of the most interesting devices, including the popular Kindle Paperwhite II. Let’s see, which one to choose.

Shining screen

Electronic paper in terms of properties like traditional printed publications. Unfortunately, the E-Ink screens are much darker than the paper. The contrast of the text is therefore smaller. This does not change the fact that this is currently the best way to read electronic editions. To improve the ease of reading the producers have released a device with illuminated screens. Self backlight E-Ink is fragile, however, allows to obtain high contrast, and most importantly to read in the dark. In this test, three readers have the function: PocketBook Touch Lux, Onyx Boox After Glow and Kindle Paperwhite II. It works similarly, but the most natural and pleasant to the eye color of a Kindle. PocketBook Biel and Onyx is too cold.

test-ebook-shows a comparison-screens-s.jpg

difference between shining and niepod?wietlonym screen is enormous. Kindle Paperwhite II resembles a traditional book, appeared on PocketBook Mini is yellowed. Using the fingerprint reader requires good lighting.

Service

Also only these three models have a touch screen. If we count on a comfortable service, it is a necessary part of every reader. In terms of convenience distinguished Kindle. It has the most thoughtful and intuitive interface. There is not even a button for menu operation, yet all we can do very quickly. The only problem is the lack of Polish language. This model is not officially available on the market.

most functional interface can be found in PocketBook Touch Lux. It is useful, for example, the ability to switch between running in the background functions (multi-tasking). Both PocketBook and Onyx have physical buttons for paging through. This is a convenient solution. PocketBook models Mini, and Manta EBOOK04B serve buttons. Interfaces both models are transparent, but in the case of the Manta location of the keys is not considered.

Downloading e-books

All readers can be connected to your computer and copy e-books on the internal memory. However, this is not convenient. In addition to the Kindle tested models also have a memory card slot – use miniature microSD card is slightly better option. The most convenient way, however, to use an Internet connection. Users Onyx and PocketBook Touch Lux can buy books directly through the online bookstore reader. Kindle also, but Amazon store does not have Polish language items. Much more interesting are the functions of storing e-books in the Internet cloud, a sufficient reason to the reader has Wi-Fi module.

For Lux Touch PocketBook e-books can be stored on disk online Dropbox, Onyx supports Google Drive and SkyDrive. A slightly different, more convenient approach is to Amazon. Kindle Paperwhite II uses the Amazon cloud. To send an e-book to your device, just send an e-mail to the address assigned during registration to our reader. Amazon Cloud also supports converting files. After sending a message with the subject convert the attached file format: DOC, DOCX, HTML, RTF, TXT, JPEG,. JPG, GIF, BMP, PDF reader get an acceptable document AZW.

course to comfortably use a reader, you can use the tools to facilitate the synchronization. BuddyPrice Send to Kindle or more universal application Readbility allow you to send to the reader, for example, an article from a web page directly from the browser.

test-ebook-shows a comparison-for displaying-s.jpg

Manta has low resolution and errors in displaying shades of gray. Kindle Compared with image quality is poor.

Additional Features

main function tested e-book is to display electronic books. However, manufacturers equip their devices with other, sometimes more, sometimes less interesting features. If you like to read foreign-language literature will appreciate the English-Polish dictionary (PocketBook Touch Lux, Onyx Boox After Glow), may be useful to the notebook and Web browser. Games, music player or RSS reader is a superfluous add-ons much more suitable to your smartphone than e-book reader.

Power

Readers with backlit draw more current than without. Amazon promises that the new Kindle allows 28 hours of continuous reading. PocketBook Touch Lux should be enough to read 30 books, and Onyx for a few weeks of use. Non-illuminated displays draw current only when you refresh – PocketBook Mini allows you to view 8000 pages.

Conclusion

was the best reader PocketBook Touch Lux. It has a backlit display and functional interface. Popular Kindle overcomes support for Polish buyers. The winner of awards Price / Quality is also a product PocketBook – Mini. It’s the cheapest reader test.

How does the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 "measure up? Here's our review - Tech Digest

The iPad Air Better be careful – there’s a stalking horse on the horizon. Amazon’s Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 “is not just for reading books. This latest and largest incarnation shows That Amazon are serious about making waves in the tablet space – but is it any good? Read our review to find out.

firehdx.png

The Hardware

When you first pick up a Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 “The first thing to do is find the” on ” button. Unlike most other tablets, the switches for on / off and volume controls are on the back of the unit, and not the edges – Which actually makes a lot of sense ergonomically.

The device itself certainly feels fairly solid – and is pleasant to hold. Nor is it too heavy. Under the hood things are looking good too: it’s got a nice-and-powerful 2.2GHz Snapdragon processor inside, along with 2GB of RAM – with storage options available as either 16, 32 or 64GB. The display Appears crisp -: which is no surprise when it runs at 2560×1600 – with a pixel density of 339ppi – even better than the iPad. Amazon are serious about this device taking on the Apple behemoth. The rear camera is a decent 8 megapixels – and the front camera is even 720p HD, Which will be nice for Skype and the like.

The Software

Once you’ve powered on the HDX for the first time, and the screen has lit up, you ‘ re greeted with a tablet That is already configured for your Amazon account – brilliant. Then it is just a simple case of connecting to your Wi-Fi, and you’re away. If you’re already a Kindle user, it’ll load up all of your book purchases right there in the middle of the screen.

fireos.png

If you’ve used an Android device before, and the flight will be familiar … but it will be eerily different. It’s Android, but not as you know it. The big difference Is That there’s nothing to be found Google: no apps for YouTube, Gmail, Google Calendar and everything else – though you can still access them through the built in web browser. If you’re a big user of Google’s services, this will come as a bit of a shock. I was certainly left wondering how to people function without Google hardwired into Their devices

The lack of Google influence is interesting – and shows a completely different direction for Android. One nice innovation Is That right in the middle of the screen is a coverflow-style lists of what you’ve looked at on the device most recently, to make skipping back easily. So you can easily jump right back into That book, or back to Those photos.

The device is, of course, great for reading. All of your books are there and Amazon’s Kindle app does the job very well indeed – with colored highlighting, social sharing and all of That sort of thing taken care of. Now it’s just a case of sitting down and reading That worthy tome you’ve been meaning a tackle … rather than checking your tweets again … and maybe playing a bit of Candy Crush. Ahem.

What’s clear with the Kindle Fire is that you’re constantly plugged into the Amazon ‘app’. Being the retail experts expect them your to be, there are no built-in parts of the device are not That bolted on to the store. Along the menu at the top are the different types of content you want to access april: Books, Videos, Games, Apps and so on – and they not only clicking takes you to the stuff you have on your device, but also prominently features links to the store. Even the lock screen is an advert. What’s clear Is That this device is all about consuming content.

Crucially, the app store seems well stocked – Google excepted. It seems that most of the major apps also have a presence on the store now: from Facebook, it’s Spotify, Sonos and Duolingo, to name four I find essential. Even Amazon’s arch-rival in the video (do not forget they own LoveFilm), Netflix, puts in an appearance.

firesupport.png

Perhaps this latest Kindle Fire is best known for its innovative help function. The “Mayday” button will connect you directly with a helper in one of Amazon’s call centers, complete with video chat – so you can see them and they can see you. The Amazon agent can even take direct control of your tablet – and either do stuff for you, or draw on the screen the show you what to do.

I tried this out – and within seconds you connected to the poor bloke manning the Mayday station (I like this imagine an alarm goes off at Amazon HQ), before disappointing him by telling him that I did not really need any help, but was just seeing how it worked. Kindly though he Showed me how he can draw on the screen. It was not quite as slick as the TV adverts for this feature you might have seen (the video lagged a bit) but it certainly worked. Could it be a must-have feature for technology of the future? Whilst people in some corners have criticized the idea because the goal should be a build That software is easy to use, not an elaborate help system for when it fails … but I’m fairly Certain That anyone reading who is under the age of 40 will appreciate anything That might stop them being Their family’s de-facto tech support.

The Verdict

So is the Kindle Fire HDX worth it? The 8.9 “version is clearly from gunning for the iPad Air and the basic 16GB Air costs £ 70 more than the basic Kindle Fire model. It is certainly a hugely accomplished Android tablet – it is both fast, feature packed, and it feels like a premium product . The lack of Google apps is annoying if you’re a Google power user – but you can probably get by.

Perhaps this is the only thing That gives it a flash of unprofessionalism: search for YouTube or Gmail in the app store and you’re hit with the same problem Windows Phone devices have. Nothing “proper” turns up, and instead you’re left with a bunch of knock-off third-party apps To provide an ersatz Google experience.

But if you can live with this, the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 “is a very good choice for an Android tablet. If you’re a big user of Amazon’s services – with a LoveFilm subscription and a busy Kindle library, then you can not really go wrong.
