PocketBook Touch Lux 2: worthy competitor to the Kindle – Review of Spider’s Web – Spider’s Web

partner department Spider’s Web Tests is Expertcen.pl – a new product search engine. You will find in it all the products they are looking for (not only those that are tested Spider’s Web) at the best prices on the Polish market!

Although apparently do not read, it ebook readers have enjoyed considerable popularity. More and more people are convinced to electronic forms of books and even in this category, dominated by the Amazon Kindle, the other manufacturers also found their place in the market. One of them is the company PocketBook. I had the opportunity to test the model Touch Lux 2 with back-lit screen, so now is the time to requests.

PocketBook Touch Lux 2 is the successor to the 623 Lux Touch , who tested for you Peter Grabiec. Both of these devices look like twin and at first glance it may seem that nothing is no different. If you look at the outer side, it actually will be. They have the same button layout, almost the same dimensions (although Lux 2 is slightly heavier), 6-inch, backlit screens, E Ink Peral HD resolution of 1024 x 758 pixels, or even similar weight (208 grams Lux 2 to 198 grams Lux).

????????

what has changed, we can find inside. The company PocketBook Reader exchanged faster processor system clocked at 1 GHz and has made 128 MB of RAM, which resulted in a total of 256 MB in the newer model. This should translate into a little smoother and faster work. In addition, instead of battery Li-Polymer 1000 mAh, we have a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1500 mAh. Generally PocketBook Touch Lux 2 has been slightly pimped, so that should be even better than its predecessor.

However, this review will be quite unusual, because I will not turn to describe each item of equipment, and just write about it, What I liked in the reader, and what still needs improvement.

What I liked

To have a more complete picture of what I like or not, and why, it is worth noting that every day I am a happy user of Kindle Classic. However, after a few weeks of using the PocketBook Lux 2 tight I started to think about upgrading to a different model.

Screen

lot of my evening looks that sit on a comfortable chair or lie down on the bed I assume the handset, which flies favorite, quiet music, payment lamp and switch on my ebook reader. Thanks PocketBookowi falling off the penultimate point, ie light. Illuminated E-Ink screen is a huge convenience, and absolutely essential function of this device. When I tried the Kindle doczepianymi, small lamps and loved nothing so well as the traditional table lamp. If PocketBook is even better, because the problem completely disappears. Not without significance is the fact that the backlight can be adjusted quite easily, so late in the evening or at night reader will not be dazzled the eyes, and the day you can completely turn off the backlight, and thus save some power (in Kindle’u backlight always works, even on minimum level).

??????? ?

screen has a standard and fully sufficient for reading diagonal and a pretty good resolution. For the quality you absolutely can not find fault. And if you plan to buy an ebook reader, it’s your pick among those with backlit screen. This feature really makes a difference.

workmanship

PocketBook Touch Lux 2 is a well made device. Tested my copy had a black back and white front. Below the screen are arranged several function keys that can be used if someone does not correspond to control with touch screen. The materials used are standing at a high level, the hardware does not squeak, and when all this is relatively light and comfortable in the hand. Placed on the bottom edge microUSB connector for charging and connecting the reader to the computer, the entrance to the memory card, and switch. Opted out of the headphone output mini-jack 3.5 mm. Fortunately or unfortunately – it depends on the preferences of the user. I absolutely did not mind, because the reader is to read books and do not require any additional “goodies”.

?? ??????

Versatility

Reader definitely deserve praise because of the number of supported formats. Copes with everything except what may be required of this type of device. The list is missing, of course, EPUB and MOBI, and PDF, DOC, DOCX, RTF, TXT, and many, many others. In this respect, everyone should be happy.

operating time on a single battery charge

In an era in which every moment we have to charge our smartphones, virtually every ebook reader delights the time of disconnection to re- charging connection. The manufacturer declares that the battery capacity of 1500 mAh enough to read about 8000 pages without backlight and WiFi connectivity. Of course, I have not counted exactly how many pages I read the books, but charging every few dozen days (depending on use) will not cause anyone problems.

????????

WiFi and card reader

Wirelessly connect to your home network website is an advantage, but also an absolute standard, which should be provided for each e-book reader. Permanent connection to the Network gives of course a lot of benefits, like the ability to send books using the email account (like the Kindle) or Dropbox, not to mention web browsing and use of RSS readers, if anyone feels the need.

The advantage is also a microSD memory card reader. Although the built-in 4 GB of memory, enough to upload several hundred, even several thousand books, but surely there are others, for whom, and this value will be insufficient. Just then simply plug the microSD card up to 32 GB and the problem.

???? ????

Price

No and price of the device, starting from about 550 zł, is also attractive.

What I did not like

Unfortunately, not everything in the unit is perfect. Several elements strongly annoyed me.

Performance

PocketBook Touch Lux 2 has a faster processor with 200 MHz and more RAM (256 MB to 128 MB). But it probably did not help, because the heavily disturbed me poor performance. Starting or switching between different functions too long. Even switching parties took a bit longer than Kindle’u. Of course, it was some fractions of a second, but still noticeable, and it’s a little bother.

??? ?????

Overloading functions

performance problem may stem from the fact that the reader is overloaded functions. We have here a simple game, the type of solitaire, dictionaries, applications, bookstores and so on. There’s far too much. For example, the games are practically unusable, because the already mentioned Solitaire so slow that sooner cause irritation of the user than przysporzy joy and relaxes. Not the way. Ebook readers will be reading and should have additional features only associated with it. Meanwhile, some manufacturers are trying to make them into a sort of tablet, games, accessories, and many unnecessary things. Not only are they unnecessary, but also adversely affect the speed of the device. PocketBook Touch Lux 2 were better hardware, if castrate him with some items.

???? ????

Touch Screen

Maybe it’s habit, but flip the screen crump somehow not appeal to me. An alternative way, that is, the buttons below the display, or an average of the checks due to their location. I missed the well-known solution of Kindle’ów, or the buttons on the sides of the reader. This is by far the most comfortable. The touch screen is not always responsive to the touch. In short – there is room for improvement.

?????? ?????

Summary

PocketBook Touch Lux 2 is a great device that I can recommend to most people. Maybe a little slow and overloaded with unnecessary features, but if we are able to deal with it, and probably some of those additional applications and functions even like them, it is worth to invest in it.

At the beginning of the text I wrote, that the test occurred to me the desire to exchange the reader. And so indeed it is. My Kindle Classic gladly trade the … The Kindle Paperwhite. The backlit screen is a brilliant thing, and I – although PocketBook Touch Lux 2 is a worthy opponent – but more appropriate device from Amazon.
