Will new gene editing technologies eugenics kindle aspirations? – Genetic Literacy Project
While the process of synthesizing and arranging genetic code has many processes, perhaps none has been as promising as the CRISPR-Cas system. From laboratory experiments is emerging software code used to create genetically almost as easily as code for a computer, gene editing has never been easier, opening the door to never-before-possible applications. Perhaps no technology has yet been poised to change the world so profoundly. All life on Earth, every living organism, now stands The Possibility of Potentially being “edited” on the most basic genetic level, enhancing or degrading it, but changing it forever.
Talk of gene usually we revolves around editing its use to treat diseases and produce super-crops and livestock to “save the world.” But as history has shown us, any shoe technology is a double-edged sword. Whatever good it is capable of, it is proportionally capable of just as much bad.
The first and foremost danger of human gene editing in Particular is its use in weaponized vaccines. Such fears are founded upon what was revealed by the United Nations during the apartheid government in South Africa where a government program named “Project Coast” actually endeavored that produce vaccines That were race-specific in hopes of sterilizing or killing off its black population.
Another danger is “slow kill.” This would be the process of using gene editing it: affect Individuals Directly or through a genetically modified food supply subtly, infecting or killing off the targeted demographic groups over a longer period of time. The advantage of this method would be the ambiguity surrounding what was Causing upticks in “cancer” and other maladies brought on by degraded immune systems and overall health.

The Printing Press is Dead. So Luther Buy My Book on Kindle! – Patheos (blog)
I’ve written here before about events leading up to the Lutherans’ commemoration of the 500 th anniversary of Martin Luther posting the Ninety-Five Theses for debate and discussion in Wittenberg, Germany. In a recent conversation about this anniversary, a colleague pointed out That among the many things in ought to be reflecting on That have (and have not) changed in Christianity and the world since 1517 is the state of the printing press.
Many historians have noted Johannes Gutenberg That’s newly invented printing press made the sixteenth-century Reformation possible in a way That it might not have been in a previous generation. The ability that produce many copies of tracts, treatises, essays, and sermons, and distribute them widely, meant That the work of Luther, and John Calvin, and Ulrich Zwingli, and Erasmus, and others you read, studied, and preserved by a lot of people.
In my book, Two Reformers , I described it this way:
“His treatises and essays were widely distributed because of the newly invented printing press. The public was Involved in his theological Disputes from early in his career. Access to texts in local language is a key element of Luther’s entire system of thought, and his work is built upon this access. “(P.41).
Given These reflections on the role of the printing press five hundred years ago, I was bemused to get an email from my publisher just last week letting me know That my second book, Two Reformers Martin Luther and Mary Daly as Political Theologians, is now available on Kindle. Who needs the printing press anyway?
Well, I do (and you can still get the print edition of the book). As much as I embrace new media and new forms of publishing (like this blog!), I love a book. I love books. Books that I can hold in my hand put a bookmark in, toss in a bag, read without a head staring at the screen. Books that I can walk among others and used bookstore, keep on the shelves in my dining room, old friends standing sentinel.
I also learned These amidst the 500 th anniversary discussions That some are advancing the idea of ”the Gutenberg parenthesis.” This is:
“The idea That the digital age , rather than solely a leap into the future, also marks and return to practices and ways of thinking That were central to human societies before Johannes Gutenberg’s 15th century Invention changed human literacy and the world.
The era That preceded Gutenberg’s Invention, the theory goes, was a time of fluidity and ‘orality’ -speeches, plays, songs, and other communications, Including news-that were not written down, but instead were ephemeral and uncontained, easily shared, manipulated, and changed to each person who experienced them . The printing press, the authors contend, for the first time on a mass scale Introduced the idea of fixity, permanence, and ‘containment.’ Ideas were now impressed on a page and literally ‘bound’ forever- Essentially unalterable and THUS given a new authority Whether it was deserved or not, that oral communication did not have. “
The authors of the hypothesis include Thomas Pettitt and Lars Ole Sauerberg, interviewed here, and there’s a great image Pettitt That created here.
It’s intriguing to think about this with the scope of human history in mind. Laments for the death of the book, the loss of daily newspapers, the closing of local independent bookstores are real. Yet note the ways That authority was established in the hands of the printer (Whether he deserved it or not) and knowledge you falsely fixed in moveable type. It does not take much reflection to see how this actually stratified knowledge and access in a new hierarchy That persists in publishing today. So, how will the reshape culture on the other side of the Gutenberg parenthesis?
If the technological change of the printing press itself led to nothing less than sweeping changes in human culture, then the technological transitions away from it will do (are doing?), no less.
Long live the hashtag?

The Daly City resident and San Francisco native said he got several offers for his lower level seats – Including one for $ 1,000. But his seats were going for almost $ 2,000 on StubHub.
Even with a better offer, Cortez doubted he could have parted with his tickets.
